Now, maid servants threaten stir to press for higher wages

Maid servants working in the Tulip Residency, a society spread across sectors 69, 70, and 71 of Gurgaon, have once again threatened to go on strike unless their wages were revised.

The maids issued a threat of strike after negotiations with residents that took place on Saturday failed to yield any positive results. The strike could begin soon, if the issues are not resolved, fear residents.

As per the current rates, the maids at Tulip are the most highly paid in terms of wages as compared to other sectors of Gurgaon. From a single house from a 12-hour shift, a maid easily gets Rs  25,000 from households in Tulip Ivory and Orange. The charge of Rs 6,000 per family and Rs 1,000 per cleaning from a house for part time maids is also on the higher side, said residents.

“Someone is brainwashing and instigating our maids. We fear some politically motivated people who may be involved. We take care of their medical and financial needs apart from salaries even then they are not satisfied,” said Reeta Sharma, a resident of Tulip Ivory.

The residents are getting pamphlets from the Garelu Kamgar Union, urging them to increase wages of maids.

“They have decided to fix rates on their own. This is a new phenomenon," said Sharma.

“They don't understand that they are much better paid than a lot of societies in Gurgaon. This maid issue is. created by maid placement agencies. It has nothing to do with wages. They are being used to whip up the issue,” said Nimish Kumar of Tulip Purple.

On Sunday morning, there was palpable tension in the Tulip Society as only few maids turned up for work. Some maids gathered there to create a disturbance.

"For the time being, the situation is peaceful, but the question is for how long?" lamented another resident.
