What are East Delhi societies doing for Janmashtami?

While for the women, cooking and sharing meals will be a big part of the revelry, the children, too, will have a fair role to play dressed as Radha and Krishna.

What are East Delhi societies doing for Janmashtami?

This year, in many societies Janmashtami will be celebrated on the same day as Independence Day. However, some will celebrate Janmashtami late evening today.

Kirti Apartments in Mayur Vihar Phase I Extension, for instance, will club the celebrations tomorrow.

Alka Gulati, a resident from the same society, said, “For me, tomorrow is going to be a quite a busy day. Receiving guests, cooking various recipes on children’s demand, and just joining the fun.”

All housing societies have prepared cultural programmes for the day and the effort will be to represent the various beliefs associated with the festival.

GD Bali, a resident of Upkar Apartments in Mayur Vihar Phase I Extension, said, “People of different regions celebrate Krishna Janmashtami in their own ways. The prasad also varies according to the region. But what will bind us together will be a celebration of the auspicious day. Children will certainly be seen dressed as Radha and Krishna.”

Geeta Singh, a resident of Lovely Apartments, said, “For us, a big part of the day would be the different recipes that we’ll cook — the meal that we all will share together. And, of course, we’ll do bhajans and sing ‘Hare Krishna’ all together.”

The children, of course, have a big part to play.

“This year, we have planned to involve children and allot them particular tasks, so they can understand the importance of our culture and festivals. Similarly, we have planned to celebrate Independence Day. Some handpicked children will narrate the story of any one freedom fighter,” briefed Ravi Kumar, a resident of Kirti Apartments.
