Will NGT clear the dirty water on Indirapuram’s streets?

Tired of the apathy of the civic authorities, FedAOA has approached National Green Tribunal over the issue of faulty drainage.

Will NGT clear the dirty water on Indirapuram’s streets?

Urban sanitation is at an appalling low in Indirapuram. While civic authorities have been callous, an order of the Allahabad High Court on the state of drainage and sewer lines, too, has met with no action. Tired with this messy state of affairs, the Federation of Association of Apartment Owners (FedAOA) has approached the National Green Tribunal about the issue. A case has been filed in the green court, citing the environmental impact of the existing state of urban sanitation.

In response to a PIL filed by the Residents Association of Ghaziabad, the Allahabad High Court had directed Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) to convene a meeting with representatives of residents to find a plausible solution to the problem.

This was in February this year. Following the court’s directive, a five-member team of residents had conducted meetings with officials of the civic authority and put forth their suggestions. The court had also directed the authority to take necessary steps to redress the grievances. However, little or no development has been witnessed after that.

Interestingly, in response to an RTI query that residents have filed on this issue, GDA has said that there has been progress in terms of getting consultants to scrutinise existing sewer lines with the help of robotics. A similar status was shared over several other issues such as the setting up of an STP and replacement of sewer lines.

Speaking to City Spidey, residents and AOA members from several high-rise societies in Indirapuram have said that despite several follow-ups with agencies, the sewer infrastructure of Indirapuram has not improved. At times, sewer water overflows to basements, and society managements have to dispose of the untreated water directly into neighbourhood drains through pumps. This not only pollutes the neighbourhood but also contaminates the groundwater.

Several high-rises in Ghaziabad have also started dumping sewer water stored in tankers into open fields situated on the outskirts of the city.

Speaking to City Spidey, Alok Kumar, president of FedAOA, said, “We finally had to approach NGT about this issue and are hoping for a solution.”

Prashant Kumar, counsel for the federation, added that the case shall probably be listed by Wednesday. “We are also in the process of filing a supplementary list of documents and details before the court,” he shared.
