Ghaziabad on high alert after the Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh verdict

As widespread violence erupted in areas of Haryana and Punjab following godman Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh’s conviction of rape by the CBI court in Panchkula, Ghaziabad was sent on high alert, with the administration ordering a strict imposition of Section 144 in the district.

While police presence was seen across the city, Ministhy S, district magistrate of Ghaziabad, also ordered all schools to remain closed tomorrow. Preeti Jayaswal, additional city magistrate, also ordered officials of the administration to remain on high alert in case of any disruption in their respective areas.

Akash Tomar, SP City, also asked residents to avoid sharing “provocative images or videos related to the Gurmeet Ram Rahim case”, which might further aggravate the situation. Meanwhile, rumours spread about the Dera’s supporters reaching the Vaishali Metro station area. However, the situation was immediately brought under control by local police.

A complaint was also lodged at the Loni police station about a bus being torched at the Loni bus depot. However, the police maintained that the incident was not connected to the Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh case and was the deed of miscreants.

The district magistrate, along with the police and adminsitrative officials, also conducted an inquiry at a Dera ashram in Rajnagar Extension.

While most offices and businesses downed shutters early, it also caused a sudden rush on the city streets. Residents complained of long traffic jams. However, the situation eased out gradually.
