Elite Homz, Noida: Major fire mishap averted by residents

A major fire broke out yesterday late night in a house on the second floor of Elite Homz, a residential complex in Sector 77, Noida. But thankfully, the residents were able to douse the fire on their own before the arrival of the fire tenders.

The fire was supposedly caused by a short circuit in Flat No. 201 of Block D.

Residents immediately raised the alarm upon seeing the smoke coming out from the second floor of Block D. They rushed to the maintenance office to inform the staff on duty.

According to eyewitness accounts, the flat was locked from outside and the owners were out at the time of the incident. The lock had to be broken down.

No causalities were reported, however, a resident suffered minor injury as he slipped down while putting out the fire.

A resident also informed the fire department of Noida about the incident. It took them around 10-15 minutes to reach the society, but the fire had already been put out. Fire tenders were deployed from another fire-incident site in Sector 68.

Meanwhile, residents tried to put out the fire. They tried to start pump of the fire-fighting system in the society, but it wasn’t working properly. Some even brought water from the ground floor of the block.

Veer Bhadra Singh, a resident, said, “When we tried to open the hose on the second floor of the building, it didn’t open. So we opened the other hose on the ground floor. The developer of the society has been claiming that the fire-fighting system is functional, but we found out the truth yesterday night.”

When City Spidey reached the society, the owner of the flat had still not come back.

Arun Kumar Singh, chief fire officer with Noida fire service, confirmed that they had found the system defective. He said, “Also the staff was not trained so that could be one of the reasons why they were unable to open the hose. We have received the complaint from residents. The fire-fighting system of the society will be examined soon.”
