Ministry of Urban Development to allocate Rs 300 crore to MCD

The Ghazipur landfill collapse on September 1 has triggered a wave of panic in the municipal fraternity. Now there is a clear focus on improving the city’s waste management ecosystem. As a step in this direction, the Ministry of Urban Development has decided to provide financial assistance of Rs 300 crore to Delhi Municipal Corporations.

Each civic body namely North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC), South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) and East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) have been allocated Rs 100 crore. Hardeep Singh Puri, Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs, made this announcement of fund allocation today while addressing a conference on public affairs.

The minister said that the civic bodies of the national capital would spend Rs 100 crore each for procuring machines for the collection, transport and storage of solid waste. “All vehicles and mechanical equipment would be procured and commissioned by the end of this December,” Puri informed.

The minister also urged the civic bodies to procure decentralised treatment plants and special machines for the upkeep of drains and sewers.

MCDs shall spend the allocated budget for procuring equipment which includes battery mounted and automated litter pickers, accelerated composters; bio- methanation plants and recycle machines for drains and sewers. “This should bring some relief in the national capital,” the minister added.
