DIG’s stolen SUV recovered; seven held In the dragnet: The gang of car thieves in police custody

Three months ago, a beacon-bearing SUV was stolen from Sector 23, Noida. The fact that the car belonged to a DIG in the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) catapulted it to national news. Today, three months later, the stolen car has been recovered and seven members of a gang involved in car thefts have been arrested.

Noida Police intercepted the stolen SUV from the Faridabad-Noida-Ghaziabad road as the gang was trying to transport it to Siliguri in West Bengal. The police also recovered two other cars stolen from Noida.

The police identified the leader of the gang as Deepankar Sarkar, a lawyer who was making forged documents for the stolen vehicles. Other members of the gang were identified as Dinesh, Deepak, Rajkumar, Rajvir, Pravin and Mantosh Sarkar. They have all been booked under Section 379 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The gang's modus operandi was to steal cars, make forged documents and then sell them with new registration certificates and number plates in states such as West Bengal, Nagaland, Assam and Bihar.

The accused told the police that they could not sell the SUV as the case had become high-profile after the extensive media coverage.
