GreNo: Where police get a six-day week

SP Greater Noida announced weekly offs for all GreNo policemen from today. Residents question the move, saying this will only worsen law and order in the city.

GreNo: Where police get a six-day week

Lawlessness seems to be an ever-growing problem in Greater Noida. Police presence and patrolling are non-existent in most areas and the city has witnessed a number of crimes in the past few days. Residents do not feel safe even in upscale, well-guarded societies.

A week back, residents were shocked to find that SP Greater Noida Abhishek Yadav had declared weekly offs for policemen from all the 13 police stations in the city. The idea did not go down well with residents, some of whom drew a comparison with Noida, which is considered much safer than Greater Noida. If policemen in Noida don't get weekly offs, why should policemen in Greater Noida, they asked.

Rohit Sharma, a resident of AWHO society, told City Spidey that he had never seen any policeman on the stretch between Pari Chowk and his society in the evenings. "Their response time is so poor that we can't rely on the police in case of emergencies. In the light of the recent incidents of crime, it is a bad idea to allow policemen to take weekly offs."

Pankaj Dixit, a resident of NTPC society, said there was no trace of police after dark around his society, which is located near the Expressway and a few villages. "One can understand the logic of weekly offs under normal circumstances, when there's a check on crime and there are enough policemen to step in, in case of staff leave. But GreNo has an acute shortage of policemen anyway. There's no sense in introducing weekly offs in such a situation."

SP Greater Noida, however, has a different take on the weekly offs. "Policemen also need some time for personal work. It is inhuman to not give them a day off every week. We will be starting our weekly-off roster from today."
