Parents in Ghaziabad have upped the ante against city private schools arbitrarily increasing fees. In a novel initiative, parents, under the banner of Abhibhavak Samajik Kalyan Samiti, have taken up a door-to-door awareness campaign on CBSE school-fee guidelines.

The campaign was started from Sanjay Nagar in Raj Nagar, Sector 23, on Saturday, during which activists spoke to parents about how private schools were fleecing them by flouting CBSE guidelines.

"Every parent must know what these guidelines are to avoid being duped by school managements," said Sudesh Sharma, general secretary of the samiti. "No school is allowed to charge advance or development fees from parents."

Kiran Sharma, president of the group, added that according to the CBSE guidelines, private schools could only ask parents to buy books prescribed by the National Council of Education, Research and Training (NCERT). They were also not allowed to sell books and uniforms on their premises.

The volunteers told parents that 25 per cent seats in all private schools were reserved for children from families below poverty line (BPL), but none of the schools adhered to it.
