12,000 taxis go off the road: The ban on diesel and petrol taxis has affected over 12,000 taxis in Noida and Ghaziabad. While 397 diesel and 597 petrol cabs will go off the road in Noida, the number for Ghaziabad is 3,021 diesel and 402 petrol cabs. The ban came into effect from April 1, folloing Supreme Court's refusal to extend the April 30 deadline for private taxis, both diesel and petrol, to either switch to less polluting CNG fuel or stop plying.

Murder probe transferred to CBI: One year after 27-year-old software engineer Ankit Chauhan was shot dead by two men, the Allahabad High Court has transferred the probe into the case to the CBI. Noida Police had failed to make a headway into the case. Reprimanding the police for its failure to conduct a 'fair and effective' investigation into the murder, the court gave the CBI time three months’ time to submit probe report.

Cabbie shot dead at P3 roundabout: A cab driver was shot dead in front of JP Sports City, just 500 metre from a police post. According to eyewitnesses, two men on a motorbike overtook Shamim Ahmed, who was travelling to Dankaur with his relatives in a Tata Magic, at P3 roundabout and fired at him. As he fell unconscious due to gunshot injury, his vehicle went berserk and collided with the divider injuring all the 10 occupants of the car. Ahmed was rushed by passers-by to the nearby Amrapali Hospital where doctors declared him brought dead.

GBU prof booked for harassment: On the allegation of a girl student, a faculty member of the Gautam Buddha University (GBU) has been booked for sexual harassment. Over 200 students had protested demanding suspension and arrest of the faculty member following allegation by a first year student on Friday that she was sexually harassed by him on the campus.

Ghaziabad

Murder probe transferred to CBI: The enforcement cell of GDA has issued a show cause notice to Niho Scottish Garden builder for non-compliance of the terms of a MoU with regard to civic amenities, electricity bill and illegal construction. The MoU was signed in September last year between the builder and the RWA. The builder was given 15 days’ time to reply to the notice failing which the GDA will invoke Section 25 of UP Apartment Act 2010 and the RWA will be free to lodge an FIR against the builder.

Jewellery shop looter at gun point: A jewellery shop in Indirapuram was robbed of gold worth Rs 40 lakh on Saturday. The robbers, who struck Rawalpindi Jewellers on the first floor of Express Garden Market in Vaibhav Khand around 2 pm, held the staff at gunpoint and decamped with the booty.

School expels 40 students: Shalom Hills International School here has expelled 40 students alleging that their parents refused to pay the hiked fee. The parents, however, denied the allegation, claiming that they have already cleared all the dues. They said they have paid the fee as per Form 6 for the last quarter of the previous academic session and the first quarter this session. They are also willing to pay the extra money only if the school authorities clarify under what heads it's being charged.

Protest against CNG station and petrol pump: Residents of DLF Westend on Sunday protested against the upcoming CNG station and petrol pump next to their premises. They say the station and petrol pump will pose a risk of fire accidents and health hazards to the area.

Doctors on mission pollution-free city: Going beyond their call of duty, a group of doctors in the city have taken an initiative to spread awareness about the harmful effects of pollution. They are set to take to the streets to spread their message and launch a CNG bus "Clean Air Express". The bus will travel through major junctions and traffic signals on Monday and Tuesday to mark the World Asthma Day on May 3.

Water shortage in Sectors 51 and 50: With the Huda cutting down its supply, residents of Sectors 51 and 50 are facing water shortage for the past three days. While water supply been reduced by 40 and 35 per cent in Sectors 51 and Sector 50 respectively.
