In an attempt to improve Ghaziabad’s rank in the list of 97 cities selected for the Smart City Mission, the mayor of Ghaziabad, Ashu Verma, launched a resident-support unit recently. Ghaziabad currently ranks 87th in the list.
The unit enables residents to directly communicate with the mayor as well as lodge complaints through municipal corporation’s toll free number, 18001803012.
The mayor said, “It is my aim to turn Ghaziabad into a world-class city. The municipal corporation has hired new consultants in line with that vision. Rahul Singh and Uma Shankar Pandey, the representatives of the consulting firm, will oversee the implementation of Smart City and Swachh Bharat campaigns.”
Ashu Verma added that the municipality had plans to construct public toilets across the city. Under the smart city initiative, the municipality would collect garbage from all households of the city. Bio-degradable waste would be utilised to produce compost and manure. School children would also be gifted saplings on their birthdays.
Verma held a meeting with the principals of 51 schools on Monday. The principals suggested improvements in the education system. He told City Spidey that he had already started taking suggestions from various sections of the city. The meeting with the principals will be followed by meetings with industrialists, businessmen and RWA/AOA heads.
Alok Kumar, president of FedAOA, said, “The municipal corporation must consider several factors like greenery, sanitation, floor area ratio of buildings, potable water and other such issues to develop Ghaziabad into a smart city in the real sense. If the issues were not resolved, the city will just be a concrete jungle."
