Noida

City mountaineer may miss target: Arjun Vajpai, a young mountaineer from Noida, is stranded at the advanced base camp at 5,700 metres due to inclement weather. The 22-year-old youth, who had set out on an expedition to Mount Makalu along the Himalayan ranges on Nepal-Tibet border, is waiting for further directions along with his team mates. Mount Makalu is the fifth highest mountain in the world. Arjun is in touch with his family over WhatsApp.

1,850 plots allotted through draw of lot: The Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) on Wednesday allotted 1,850 residential plots to buyers through a lottery system. Only 4,000 applicants applied for these plots under the scheme launched in January for the benefit of middle-class homebuyers.

GBU councelling from May 27: Counselling process for various academic programmes in Gautam Buddha University (GBU) will get underway on May 27. Results for the entrance tests for the graduate, postgraduate and PhD programmes will be out by then. The results for General Proficiency Test for Undergraduates (GPTU) and general proficiency tests (GPT) for postgraduate programmes and general proficiency test for residents (GPR) for different PhD programmes will be out on May 25.

Pharmacy owner shot dead: A 25-year-old youth was shot dead by two unidentified assailants near a petrol pump in Bhangel on Wednesday night. Naseem, who was on his way to home after closing his pharmacy shop, stepped out of his car to speak to his two acquaintances when two bike-borne men opened fire at him. Both the assailants and the victim's acquaintances fled the spot.

Sec 99 resident found dead in well: The body of a 40-year-old resident of Sector 99 was recovered from a well in Sikandrabad, Bulandshahr. He was missing from Noida since Wednesday morning. Identified as Mukesh Saini, the deceased was working at a local media house. After leaving his house in his Maruti Alto on Wednesday morning, Mukesh had called his wife to inform her that he was going to Sikandrabad to meet a relative.

Man arrested for stealing mobiles from mall: A youth was arrested by the police for stealing mobile phones worth over Rs 2 lakh from a store in The Great India Place Mall. The accused, Shakeel, 25, an electrician who worked at the shop on contract basis, used to enter the shop through the air conditioning duct to steal eight expensive cell phones.

Unitech faces Rs 130-cr fine: The Greater Noida Authority is set to impose Rs 130 crore penalty on realty firm Unitech Group for failure to clear Rs 1,023 crore land dues. The move is followed by cancellation of the allotment of a 100-acre plot to Unitech in November last year. The authority has already seized Rs 300 crore deposited by the realty firm for the 100 acres prime land in Sector Mu of Greater Noida.

E-way oustees threaten contempt motion: Residents of New Palam Vihar facing displacement due to the Dwarka expressway held out an ultimatum to Huda. Holding fresh round of protest outside the Huda office on Wednesday, they said if the allotment of alternative plots is delayed further, they will file a contempt motion against urban development authority in the Punjab and Haryana high court. The protesters rejected the proposal for rehabilitation in alternative plots in Sector 37C instead of Sector 110A.

Govt school timing changed: The district administration on Wednesday changed timings of all government schools in view of the ongoing heat wave conditions. The schools will now open from 7 am instead of 12 noon. The decision is taken in the wake of cases of heat stroke amongst children. The district administration has also requested authorities to shut schools early for summer vacation.
