Woman taking part in the contest which is inspired by a recent scheme, 'Selfie with Daughter'.
With an aim to increase the green cover in the city and thereby help fight global warming, district administration of Gurgaon, in association with an NGO, Nihswarh Kadam, has embarked upon a contest – 'Selfie with Tree'. Deputy Commissioner of Gurgaon, TL Satya Prakash, launched the event at Info City in Sector 33 on Saturday by planting five saplings of banyan and peepal.
During the event, which will last till June 15, people can post their photographs or videos on social networking sites or email to the NGO with their selfies shot while planting trees. These entries stand a chance to win cash awards and citations.
The selfie which gets highest number of appreciations will win the first prize with Rs 11,000. The second and third prize winners will get Rs 5,100 and Rs 1,100 respectively. Winners will also get certificates of recognition from noted environmentalists of the country.
Speaking on the occasion, the deputy commissioner said, “Peepal, banyan, neem or shisham are known to have immense medicinal properties and hence are given highest importance in our tradition. Apart from this, these tree species release oxygen in the environment in abundance.”
“The concept, “Selfie with Tree”, took inspiration from the recent “Selfie with Daughter” programme. The most popular selfie emerging from the contest will be sent to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and the winners will also be awarded by state governments,” said Arvind, an official of Nihswarh Kadam.

Ranvir Sagar, a resident of Sector 4, described the event as a great initiative which will go a long way in protecting the environment. “It will definitely promote plantation and sensitise people to make conscious efforts to maintain greenery in the region,” he added.
The NGO is planning to plant saplings in Aravalli mountain range too.
