Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) is all set to give a new lease of life to a water body in Sector 53 to tackle the depleting ground water problem in the city.

The 10-acre water body is located near Saraswati Kunj, a residential society on Golf Course Road. It accumulates rainwater coming down from the Aravalis during the monsoons. As per plan, the civic body will also build a sewage treatment plant at Saraswati Kunj in an attempt to revive the polluted water body.

MCG commissioner TL Satyaprakash said, "The city is facing a water crisis. The groundwater level is depleting at an alarming rate but not getting recharged. The idea is to revive water bodies that have been ignored for the past 30 years. For a city like Gurgaon, the importance of natural water bodies can't be neglected as groundwater recharge is quite significant."

The revival of this water body is part of the project planned by MCG in January 2016. The plan includes rejuvenation of 12 lakes and ponds across the city. MCG has carried out a comprehensive study with the help of Delhi's Future Institute in December 2015 to identify catchment areas so that ponds can be rejuvenated naturally and groundwater can be recharged during monsoon.

"Out of the 120 water bodies all over the city, we identified 12 for the revival project. We plan to renew these ponds, lakes and other water bodies in six months' time," said Swati Sharma, head of Programs and Research, Future Institute of Delhi.
