Dwarka sanitation: A waste of a system

In an interaction session today with the mayor of South Delhi Municipal Corporation, Dwarka residents spoke out about the sub-city's doddering waste-management system.

Dwarka sanitation: A waste of a system

In an event organised today at the community hall of Sector 23, Dwarka, residents interacted with the mayor of South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC), Shyam Sharma, to discuss the city’s sanitation.

Over a hundred residents from various sectors and societies participated in the event and shared their views on the city’s deteriorating sanitation system, and requested the mayor to look into various issues such as disposal of solid and horticultural waste on the roads, and inadequate picking and clearance of garbage.

The residents spoke openly of their concerns before the SDMC officials, former MLA of the area, Rajesh Gehlot, and the newly elected councillor, Ramesh Matiala. Cicily Kodiyan, the president of the Association of Neighbourhood Ladies Get-Together (ANHLGT) and a resident of Sheetal Vihar Society of Sector 23, complained about poor sanitation in the area. "There’s garbage everywhere and its disposal is very badly managed," she said. "There’s poor coordination between the SDMC officials and the residents, and to make matters worse, the higher officials are indifferent and high-handed in their dealing with people."

SL Langar, a social worker and a resident of the Green Tower society, said the number of garbage trucks has dwindled, preventing swift disposal of waste. Again, there are fewer number of sweepers and the overall execution of waste management is wanting, added another resident, Rejimon CK of Nav Sansad Vihar.

Some used pretty strong words to describe the situation. The vice-president of the New Millennium Apartments, Sector 22, MS Suri, said, “Political ambitions must be kept aside and the officials must work on their coordination to improve the increasingly deteriorating waste-management situation in Dwarka.”

The mayor assuaged the fears of the residents and promised to take all measures necessary to keep the sub-city clean. He also urged them to coordinate with SDMC officials responsible for the cleaning of a certain area.

Former MLA Rajesh Gehlot used the occasion to announce a yoga-cum-recreation hall for ANHLGT — to be used jointly by Sukh Dukh Ke Sathi.

Some residents, however, felt that the reach of the event could have been more had their been enough publicity. Quite a few sectors went unrepresented, they said. “This was a big opportunity for residents to be able to interact with SDMC officials in the presence of the mayor," said Madhury Varshney of Ekta society. "But somehow, many people and sectors were not informed about the visit. There should be sufficient publicity before such events to ensure greater representation.”
