To make Gurgaon a clean and green city, a decentralised waste-management plant has been set up in Sector 15 Part II. The Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon has roped in the inmates of the district jail, Bhondsi, to lend a hand in the initiative. Also part of the venture are RWAs and the NGO Green Bandhu.
Anu Shoekand, joint municipal commissioner, held a meeting recently with RWA representatives of various societies and the plotted area of Part I and Part II to kick off the polythene-free campaign. The initiative began under the guidance of TL Satya Prakash, Municipal Commissioner of Gurgaon.
“The inmates of Bhondsi jail are being trained to make cloth bags, which will be given to the RWA for free distribution. Moreover, these bags will be accessible to district residents,” Shoekand said.
The MCG appealed to the RWAs to segregate waste and then give it to the garbage collectors for better functioning of the plant. The wet waste will be converted into compost in the plant, to be used in colony parks; and the dry waste will be sent for recycling. Garbage collectors have been asked to keep two collection bins, waste from which will be processed separately.
Shoekand said, “First, we have to make ourselves aware and only then can we pass on the cleanliness message to others. No initiative can ever be successful without the participation of the people, and that is why we have involved the residents and RWA representatives."
The plant has been set up in consultation with Green Bandhu, which has already set up such plants in many condominiums in the city. The NGO said that the plant will be clean and odour-free, so residents are not inconvenienced.
Saurabh Bardhan, founder of Green Bandhu, told City Spidey, “The plant has been set up keeping in mind the waste-management need in the city. Once the plant becomes a success in this sector, we will set up more in other sectors as well.”
NS Rangi, RWA president of Park View Apartments, said, “They have planned to gift cloth bags to all residents, with a message to stop using polythene bags. The residents will also be requested to contribute to the mission, so as to make it a mass operation. This sector will be free of municipal garbage and polythene. We have a vision to make our sector clean and beautiful, and we hope to achieve it.”
