An intersection in Sector 27, Noida, is set to be converted into the first traffic island in the city.

NP Singh, district magistrate, told City Spidey, “Once the traffic island is built, accidents, particularly those involving pedestrians, will be reduced. It will also ensure smooth traffic movement.”

A traffic island is a small raised area in the middle of a road which provides a safe place for pedestrians to stand, and marks a division between two opposing streams of traffic. These islands also channelise traffic and reduce the speed of vehicles.

Noida Authority’s proposal for traffic islands comes as a great relief to pedestrians. The system also includes manual control of the pedestrian lights at zebra crossings. The Authority is still working out the budget and the tender will be floated later. To be state-of-the-art, the proposed traffic island would be equipped with CCTV cameras, traffic signage and zebra crossings.

After the Sector 27 intersection, similar traffic islands will be built on intersections in Sector 71, Sector 37 and Pari Chowk in Greater Noida.
