New Delhi: After numerous successful trials, the Krishna Nagar's Lal Quarter Market area has been declared completely vehicle-free zone from Monday. Now people will have to park their vehicles 2.5 km away from the main market.

This is first-of-its-kind drive where a market area has been declared as only pedestrian zone. This was implemented in consultation with the market assocation and the local Resident Welfare Association (RWA).

The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) was trying to execute this at the Connaught Place market but somehow it has not been materialised.

Sandeep Kapoor, the councillor and chairman of standing committee of  East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) did an inspection of the area on Monday.

He said, “It has come as a big relief to residents, buyers and traders as well. It has been an over crowded market since long. Local people were constantly asking for concrete solution. 6 months back, we did first successful trial.”

“Earlier, market association was not in favour of this project but they agreed to it later on,” he added.

People, willing to shop at the market, will have to park their vehicles at MCD parking located 2.5 km away.

RWA Bhagidari member, BS Vohra said, “With the help of local leaders, police and residents, Lal Quarter Market was declared pedestrian zone, for which, we were struggling since long.”

Resident of Krishna Nagar, Malati Devi said, “We are happy to see this change. Now shopping would be easy and hassle free in the market.”
