Residents from various societies of Dwarka Sector 23 observed Gandhi Jayanti by carrying out a cleanliness campaign in the neighbourhood parks.

The parks — transferred from the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) to the Municipal Corporation — were chosen for the campaign because they represented the most neglected areas of the neighbourhood.

SL Langar, former president of Green Tower Society and instrumental in organising the campaign, said, “These parks lie in neglect. They haven't been cleaned since their takeover by the MCD six months back. We selected three to carry out the drive.”

The campaign started around 8 am, when morning walkers gathered at Park No 4, behind Green Tower society. About 40 people from various societies, such as New Kanchanjunga, New Millennium, Green Tower, Phillips, Shaman, Sheetal Vihar and Manisha, participated in the drive.  “At 7.45 am, morning walkers from Park No 4 and Pochanpur assembled at the park. We handed out gloves and garbage bags to everyone and set out cleaning Park Nos 5, 3 and 8. We enjoyed doing it — after all, it is our children who play here," said Langar.

DC Mathur, a resident of New Kanchanjunga Apartments and secretary of Sukh Dukh Ke Sathi, said, "We have decided to carry out similar campaigns in the sector every month, or even every fortnight. Clearly, the corporation is not concerned with cleaning the back lanes and parks. So we have taken up the responsibility now.”
