Parents of Captain Devinder Singh Jass, a martyr, expressed gratitude after the memorial board dedicated to their son was re-installed within a week of being damaged. According to locals, the board had been damaged by workers while repairing the verges on the road.
The parents, who live in Mahagun Mansion Phase I, Indirapuram, said they were informed about the broken granite board on January 9. They were dismayed after they found their son's memorial broken and lying in pieces.
However, speaking to City Spidey, Bhupinder Singn Jass, the martyr's father, expressed gratitude to the media for raising the issue and also thanked GDA officials and engineers of the construction company for their swift action.
In July 2010, the road between Mahagun Mansion and Shipra Mall was named Shaheed Devinder Singh Jass Marg after the man who had sacrificed his life fighting terrorists.
"The memorial reminds us of our son's sacrifice every day. Finding it gone was extremely painful for us," Jass told City Spidey.
Jass said there would be two such boards at two ends of Shaheed Devinder Singh Jass Marg now, one in front of Mahagun Mansion and the other near Shipra Mall. "The engineers of the construction company told me that work was almost complete and that the boards would be unveiled by January 14," he added.
Maintaining that the board was damaged by workers, Jass said it had occurred as a result of the lack of communication between civic authorities and local residents. "If we were informed of such development work being conducted near our society, we would have objected to the work and prevented the memorial from being broken. We must be kept abreast of local development work," said Jass.
