The Haryana cabinet on April 18 approved the demand for a university in Kankrola village, situated 24 km from Gurgaon. But residents would have to wait for two years for the institution as there is no space for a temporary campus.
Rao Narbir Singh, Haryana Public Works Department minister and an MLA from Gurgaon’s Badshahpur constituency, had pushed for a university in the village, which falls under his constituency.
On April 2, Singh had announced at a public function that the foundation stone of the university would be laid this month. His spokesperson had said that the date would be announced after consultation with Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and completion of certain formalities.
Khattar had announced on April 10, 2016, that the university would be set up at a cost of Rs 400 crore in an area of 50 acres.
Although Gurgaon has three government colleges, with 20,000 students, thousands of students move to other cities for higher education.
