EDMC may not have come up with an alternative dumpsite to Ghazipur, but if its tall claims are to be believed, it may have come up with a plan to manage waste by 2019.
EDMC on Monday passed a proposal to set up a waste-to-energy plant of 2,000 metric tonnes capacity at the Ghazipur landfill site. This apparently came after it was repeatedly hauled up by both Delhi High Court and National Green Tribunal for its utter failure to manage waste in the region.
Ranbir Singh, commissioner, EDMC, said, “We have eight acres of land at the Ghazipur landfill site, where we have decided to set up the waste to energy plant. The idea is to recycle as much waste as possible, so very little is left at the dumpsite.”
“At present,” Singh continued, “About 2,300 metric tonnes of waste is generated every day, which is poised to increase to 2,600 metric tonnes by 2020. So an alternative plan had to be put in place to manage waste and provide better sanitation to residents of East Delhi.”
Apart from this, EDMC has also decided to set up composting pits in residential colonies, especially in larger parks. “The project has already been initiated in Mayur Vihar Phase I, which sees garbage generated by about 2,500 families,” Singh said.
