In a heartening report released on Tuesday, Gurgaon has managed to achieve a healthy sex ratio for the first time in 10 years!

The average sex ratio at birth in the district was 950 in January this year. The same number was 903.58 in 2017, and 883.84 in 2016.

In an attempt to strengthen the situation, the health department conducted a meeting on Tuesday, during which it released the report on sex ratio. The meeting was held to formulate a plan to ensure strict implementation of the Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (Regulation and Prevention of Misuse) Act, 1994, in Gurgaon.

At the meeting, Chief Medical Officer BK Rajora discussed the many ways in which the district administration and the health department had curbed illegal sex determination and female foeticide. He added that surprise raids on various medical centres to curb illegal sex-determination procedures had helped check the practice.

The district will also soon get five new ultrasound centres, and anyone providing any information on illegal sex determination practices will be awarded Rs 1 lakh.
