A section of taxi drivers on Monday took to the road protesting a Supreme Court decision to ban cabs operating on diesel.
The protesting group caused major traffic snarls along the Delhi-Noida borders and the DND flyway, with commuting becoming an ordeal for school-going children and office-goers.
According to RTO Noida, there are 8397 diesel cars in the city. With the ban, a massive shortage of cabs is on the cards, with the number of cabs running on petrol and CNG being 597 and 1844 respectively, which is a 77 per cent decrease in the number of cabs almost overnight. Now, that's bound to ruffle some feathers.
Sanjay Sharma, a resident of Sector 20, said, "We are in a fix. CNG and petrol cabs are hardly available."
A resident of Sector 27, Sangeeta Pathak, told City Spidey that her daughter carpooled to school in a diesel cab everyday. "I don't know what we'll do now."
Like Pathak, several others, who must have used diesel cabs on a regular basis, are left hanging after the Supreme Court's decision.
RTO Rachna Yaduvanshi said, "Only CNG permits will be issued for cabs in Delhi/NCR from now on."
