A recent visit to the main post office of Dwarka at Sector 6 was a rude shock for me as I was unable to find any post cards, envelopes and postal orders there.
A thought crept inside me that if this was the situation in a major post office of the country, what would be the scenario in the post offices located in remote villages?
I have witnessed a recent trend among politicians and bureaucrats where they try to destroy public services and offer benefits to private companies. As the state owned companies suffer huge losses, the government starts outsourcing services and privatises them in the long run.
It seems that similar tactics are being employed with the country‘s postal services.
As a citizen I protest against such tactics and warn all stakeholders against privatising these services.
Postal services in the country are run by the Ministry of Communication and cover all the villages & cities. India has the largest postal network in the world with over 1, 54,882 Post Offices (as on 31.03.2014) of which 1, 39,182 (89.86%) are in the rural areas. Moreover, postal services employ nearly five lakh people in the country.
