At a time when the world is debating global warming and the need to conserve the Earth's resources, especially water, Sahyadri Apartments in Sector 12, Dwarka, is walking the talk. It boasts a rainwater harvesting system in its central park.

The president, RN Thakur, said, “We are keen on water conservation. We believe it's the need of the hour. We are trying to harness rainwater to charge the water table.”

According to the society’s management, approximately Rs 4 lakh has been spent on developing the system.

The society’s former treasurer, PC Xavier, said, “After the system has been properly set up, we will ask for assistance from the Delhi Jal Board. It has a scheme under which it provides subsidies to societies undertaking such initiatives. I think government agencies should promote rainwater harvesting to conserve water and save the underground water reserve.”

Sahyadri is also keen to increase its green cover. Planting activities are being carried out in the society and its central park.

“We are planting ficus varieties, flowering plants and various shrubs around the society to turn it into one of the greenest in the area. We understand the importance of nature conservation, and are doing what we can to create a clean and green society,” Thakur emphasised.
