The cleaning up work on the two unauthorised waste dumps in the Aravalli, Gurgaon, was started on Friday by the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG). The dumps are located between Behrampur and Kadarpur villages.
“We have instructed our junior engineers to pick up the waste and the clean-up is almost complete,” said Bijender Sharma, MCG senior sanitation inspector.
The unauthorised dumping of waste in the Aravallis is posing a threat to the ecology.
The dumps had become huge and covered almost an acre of land. Though the most part of it has been cleaned up, some stray bits of mixed municipal waste have still been left in the area.
Moreover, a large pond had also been contaminated with leachate from the unauthorised dump. The pond lies upstream from a water body in Behrampur village.
The MCG had received notices from the Haryana State Pollution Control board (HSPCB) and the forest department in July and August, respectively. They had instructed the MCG to clean up the site and enforce the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016.
The MCG had failed to act within the time limit specified by the HSPCB and forest department. Meanwhile, the environmentalists welcomed the initiative.
