In a tragic incident, a 47-year-old man on Monday allegedly committed suicide at his residence in Shipra Sun City, a township in Ghaziabad, by hanging from the ceiling fan of his flat.

According to police, the deceased has been identified as Ajit Pratap Singh. He was a native of Uttar Pradesh's Unnao district, working as marketing head with one of the private news channels.

He was staying alone whereas his family, including wife and sons, moved to Raipur a few years ago. The elder son is pursuing his college studies whereas the younger one is 11-year-old.

“We were informed about the incident by the maid around 3 pm. She had an extra key to the flat so when she went in, she saw that Singh is hanging to the ceiling fan,” police added.

Talking to City Spidey about the incident, one of his neighbours on the condition of anonymity said, “As he was staying alone, we used to have lunch and dinner together at my place. Last night, I asked his maid to take his dinner to his flat as he was feeling tired after coming from the visarjan ceremony. Otherwise, we used to dine together! I called him around 10:30 pm and everything seemed fine then!”

Meanwhile, other residents who got to know about him expressed shock and grief over his demise.

“It is really shocking! On the day of polling, we had I a hearty laugh and good chat. And after 4 days, I get to hear that he is no more,” said Shalini Solanki, a resident of Shipra Sun City.

Though the neighbour denied the possibility of Singh suffering from depression or any mental illness, he admitted the deceased was a diabetic patient.

He also denied the possibility of Singh having any sort of family issues.

“I am in touch with her wife. They were a loving couple and a happy family,” he added.

People, who knew Singh within the society, recalled him as a good-natured person.

Sanjay Singh, councillor of Shipra Sun City ward told City Spidey, “He was very helpful during the polling day. Since mobiles and bags were not allowed inside polling booths, Singh kept safe over 800 mobiles of residents who mistakenly carried them.”

“Another reason for Singh’s popularity among the residents was he served as president of apartment owners’ association (AOA) of Shipra Sun City Phase 1 for two years,” Sanjay further added.

Prima facie, it appears to be a case of suicide, police said. "The body has been sent for postmortem to ascertain the cause of death," police added.

Meanwhile, police have recovered Singh’s cellphone for further investigation. His family members have been informed. They are en route to Ghaziabad.
