On the directions of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has extended the last day of the scheme for the waiver of arrears of water bills and Late Payment Surcharge (LPSC) till January 31, 2020.

Earlier, the cut-off date for the scheme was November 30, 2019. The objective behind the move was to add more consumers on the billing network. It aims to install functional water meters in all the household in Delhi.

Under this, the consumers can avail 100 per cent waiver on LPSC for payment of principal arrear due from March, 2019 till cut-off date.

Sources in DJB said that consumers, who will be installing functional water meters before the cut-off date, can also avail the scheme.

Kejriwal said, “The scheme will help in generating more revenue. With the recovery of arrears, the DJB can increase its revenue by Rs 600 crore. The wrong metering and artificial arrears will become story of the past. With this, financial management of the DJB will be improved.”

There are nearly 13.5 lakh consumers with arrears to the tune of Rs 2,500 crore in the domestic category and Rs 1,500 crore in the commercial category.
