Coronavirus cured mother gives birth to positive child at RML Hospital

New Delhi: The doctors at the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital have said that coronavirus can spread from the pregnant mother to child in the womb, a report said on Saturday.

Hindustan newspaper reported that a mother, who got coronavirus infection while the baby was in the womb, gave birth to a coronavirus positive child. However, at the time of the birth of the baby, the mother had become coronavirus negative.

As per Dr Rahul Chaudhary, who is an Assistant Professor with RML’s neonatal diseases, the mother had recovered from the coronavirus infection at the time of delivery.

When the child was born, her sample was tested after six hours. The child tested positive for coronavirus. According to the doctor, the birth of a coronavirus positive child from a coronavirus negative mother is the first case in the country.

“A woman giving birth to her child after being cured of coronavirus disease suggests that the corona infection can also reach the baby from the mother’s umbilical cord. However, it is very unlikely,” Dr Chaudhary was quoted as saying by Hindustan.

The 25-year-old mother was tested coronavirus positive on June 11. She was again found positive on June 25 and her report came negative on July 7 when doctors conducted RTPCR examination. The delivery was done on the next day of the examination where she tested negative for coronavirus.
