“My experience made me so hard that I wasn't even scared of death,” once Milkha said in an interview.

Milkha typically didn’t have the gift of the gab. However, life experiences had enriched him so much that whatever he spoke became inspirational for others to follow.

Here are a few quotes that depict what an inspiring soul he was in real life.

"You can achieve anything in life. It just depends on how desperate you are to achieve it".

"I was moved to tears by the thought that from being nobody the night before, I had become somebody."

People from different walks of life paid their tributes to the departed soul.

Pt Usha tweeted, in tribute to one of the most important members of the sports family, "Dark  clouds of sadness prevail with the demise of my idol and inspiration  Milkha Singhji. His story of sheer determination and hard work inspired millions and will continue to do so. As a tribute to him, students of Usha School paid homage to the legend. Rest in Peace. "

Sachin Tendulkar also shared his grief on Twitter and wrote," Rest in Peace our very own ‘Flying Sikh’ Milkha Singh Ji. Your demise has left a deep void in every Indian’s heart today, but you shall keep inspiring several generations to come".

Suresh Raina wrote, "Extremely saddened to hear about the demise of legendary Milkha Singh Ji. May his soul rest in peace. My condolences to his friends & family".

Farhan Akhtar who played the role of Milkha Singh in Bhag Milkha Bhag said " Dear Milkha Ji, a part of me still refuses to accept that you're no more. Maybe it's the stubborn side I inherited from you that side that when it sets its mind on something, just never gives up. And the truth is that you will always be alive. As you were more than a large-hearted, loving, warm, down-to-earth man you represented an idea. You represented a dream. You represented (to use your own words) how hard work, honesty, and determination can lift a  person off his knees and get him to touch the sky. You have touched all our lives. For those who knew you as a father and a friend, it was a blessing. For those who didn't you were a constant source of inspiration and a reminder of humility in success. I love you with all my heart".

Milkha Singh’s vocation was sports however his life’s inspiring journey endeared him to one and all.
