The high-mast streetlights installed at the new bridge near Sahyog Apartments and Hindustan Times Apartments in Mayur Vihar Phase I will be powered by solar energy.
The bridge, which was opened to the public on January 24, was facilitated with six high-mast streetlights two days back. The Public Works Department (PWD) of the Delhi government has also installed six solar panels, one on each light pole. The solar panels, however, are yet to be operational.
Pradeep Gupta, junior engineer, PWD, in charge of the Mayur Vihar area, told City Spidey that the streetlights would be operational soon.
"The project is at a nascent stage now," said Gupta. "The system installed in these lights will enable them to automatically switch to cable-supplied electricity if ever the solar panels are unable to supply power. We have been installing all lights with the same system these days — roads, bridges and even foot overbridges."
He said that depending upon the success of this project, PWD would set up solar panels on every street pole in Delhi. "We also want to instal solar-powered lights in residential societies," added Gupta. "We also need MCD's support to realise the project."
