Noida police starts arrest of landfill protesters not complying with notice

The Noida police on Monday started arresting people who actively participated in the protest against the construction of a landfill in Sector-123.

The police said that they had to resort to water cannon to disperse the crowd which was pelting stones even as they arrested over a dozen protesters at the construction site.

The action has been taken in accordance with the notice issued by the district administration to refrain from affecting construction work of the landfill.

Despite the notice sent by the district administration, thousands of residents from high rises, independent houses and nearby villages carried out a protest march against the Noida Authority’s decision on Sunday.

The arrested people include residents of high rises as well as nearby villages.

“We have received a list of 36 people who have been protesting against the construction of the landfill. The protests disturbed the peace in the area. Following which, we have issued notices under section 111 of CrPC to fill two personal bonds of Rs 50,000 as a promise to maintain peace during the construction of the landfill,” said Mahender Singh, City Magistrate after sending notice.

Singh said that if these people fail to follow the order then we will not return their money and we will also take action against them under the IPC section of 151, 107 and 116.

More details are awaited on this.
