The Residents Welfare Associations (RWAs) of various societies are carrying out plantation drives with the support of the authorities like Delhi Development Authority (DDA) and South Delhi Municipal Corporation. Recently, plantation drives were carried out in sectors 17, 18, 7 and 6. The DDA and Corporation officials said that many more such drives are planned in coming weeks.
According to DDA and Corporation, they are providing saplings to the people for the plantations and the RWAs are using this opportunity to make their societies and surroundings greener.
Madhu Dagar, who has planted several trees inside her society and also outside her society on footpaths and vacant spaces, shared that the support of the authorities was encouraging as they provided everything that they wanted.
“We planted saplings inside the society provided by the Corporation. We planted saplings outside provided by DDA. Such things have encouraged plantation in Dwarka. Authorities should continue it,” added Dagar.
Not only RWAs but also the social organisations like Sukh Dukh Ke Sathi, Green Circle, Association of Neighbourhood Ladies Get-together, Federation of RWAs of Sector-9 and other residents’ bodies participated in the plantation drive.
President of Federation of RWAs and President of Ganpati Apartments in Sector-9, KS Bhati, said, “As the monsoon arrived, we started plantation. DDA and MCD are there to provide saplings and it encourages people to go for plantation.”
“In our sector, we are doing plantation drive. We have named it “Smriti Vriksha” under which people adopt and nurture plants. The participants in the plantation drive have increased in Dwarka. DDA and MCD played a significant role,” added Bhati.
City Spidey had a talk with Leader of the House of SDMC Kamaljeet Sehrawat. She said that there was a target to plant about 1 lakh saplings this year. “We have directed the officials to support the residents who want to go for plantation. So, RWAs can approach for saplings in the area. We want more involvement of RWAs in such things,” she said.
Deputy Director of Horticulture, Dwarka, Jameel Ahmed said, “There was a target of five lakh plants in the area this monsoon. For that, DDA had been carrying plantation drives these days. We are also carrying plantation on our own and also in association with residents. The support of community for this noble thing is good and we are extending our support to them too for greenery in the area.”
The plantation drives in the area has also brought community people closer. People are happy over the support of authorities. VK Sharma, a resident of Sector-12, said, “If they would have been such cooperative and positive in the past then this area would have been in a decent state as far as sanitation is concerned. They should also work for sanitation in the area.”
