Dwarka: Burning of leaves, garbage continues unabated

There seems to be no respite for the residents of Dwarka from the menace of burning of dry leaves and garbage.

The worst affected from this wrongful practice are morning walkers and those living in societies located close to community parks – as these are the usual places where burning of garbage and leaves takes place.

The residents complained that this is slowly becoming a huge problem in the sub city and contributing heavily to the air pollution levels. However, the authorities don’t seem to be bothered about it and haven’t taken any steps to curb it.

JC Malhotra, a resident of Balaji Apartments in Sector 3, said, “People regularly burn garbage and horticulture waste in front of DDA Park in Sector 3. This mostly happens during morning and evening hours. Senior citizens and children are the worst affected. This is extremely dangerous for their health.”

Another place where one can easily spot burning of leaves even during the day is the lane behind Radhika Apartments in Sector 14.

Speaking to City Spidey on the matter, Ramesh Mumukshu, an RTI activist who is a resident of Sector 16B, said, “Mornings are giving a harrowing time to the residents of Dwarka as the pollution levels are very high at that hour. It is worse for people like me who suffer from asthma. Even after Dwarka topped the list recently as one of the most polluted places in Delhi, the authorities are least bothered to do anything about it.”

Shalini Singh, a resident of Sector 11, who never misses her morning walk at Sector 19 park says she has been avoiding her routine for some time now. “Every morning I am greeted by smoke in the park. The choice is that I either inhale all toxic pollutants or give my morning ritual a miss and I have opted for the latter,” she said.
