A scene at Dwarka's Sector 13 dhalao calls SDMC's bluff on waste segregation

Dwarka: The photograph on the slider of this post shows trolleys painted green are parked at the mouth of a dhalao. What does not miss the sight of an onlooker is that the trolleys are filled with a mixture of dry and wet waste whereas one of them carries a message 'Wet Waste' on it.

The dhalao under the jurisdiction of South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) is located near Metro View Apartments in Sector. The solid waste visible in the trolleys mainly consists of plastic and glasses. Such mixed waste, that too, in a container meant for wet waste reflects how the waste segregation rules are being flouted by the sanitary workers.

Even as there are clear instructions to segregate sold waste from the corporation, this practice of collecting all waste, both wet and dry in the same container is rampant in the sub-city. It not only shows the impunity with which the workers are violating the rules of the civic body but also reflects the callous approach of the authority.

On the one hand, the SDMC claims to achieve significant improvement in water management while on the other, such dhalaos are making a mockery of the system.

Despite several initiatives and claims by the authority, such dustbins if anything is tell-tale proof of the failure of the system in managing the waste in the area.
