New Delhi: After continuous rise in new cases which bettered every day in the last few days, Delhi’s new cases figure dropped significantly to 2,077 on Monday. With this, the cumulative tally reached 1,93,526. It happened after the national capital recorded the highest single-day spike of 3,256 in the last 72 days on Sunday.
However, the drop in new cases can be because of a lesser number of tests conducted on Monday. A total of 22,954 tests were conducted in the last 24 hours. 7,804 RTPCR/CBNAAT/TrueNat and 15,150 rapid antigen tests were conducted on Monday.
A total of 36,046 tests were conducted on Sunday, which was a significantly higher figure than what was reported on Monday. The testing was ramped up in the national capital on the directions of the Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.
The number of tests conducted and new cases reported from August 30 to September 6 are - 14,389 (1,358); 20,437 (2,024); 24,198 (2,312); 28,835 (2,509); 32,834 (2,737); 36,219 (2,914) and 38,895 (2,973), 36,046 (3,256).
Kejriwal had earlier said that the testing will be increased to 40,000 per day as the cases were spiking in the national capital. The number of tests conducted was lower than the average number of 36,000 tests being conducted since September 3.
It is the seventh consecutive day when over 2,000 cases have been recorded in Delhi. On June 23, the city had recorded its highest single-day spike of 3,947.
Meanwhile, the fatality increased to 32 from 29 on the previous day. The death toll has now reached 4,599 in the national capital.
There was also a breather as recoveries outnumbered the new cases after a long gap on Monday. A total of 2,411 people recovered from the deadly disease in the last 24 hours, taking the figure of total recoveries to 1,68,384.
The recovery rate slightly improved to 87.00 per cent from 86.69 per cent on the previous day. Before Monday, the recovery rate was constantly declining in the last few days. Earlier, the recovery rate had gone past 90 per cent and maintained above that mark for many days.
As the number of recoveries was bigger than the new cases, it positively affected the active cases. Active cases declined by 366 on Monday. Now, Delhi has 20,543 active cases. Prior to Monday, the active cases had increased by more than 1,000 in the last four days. It had once dropped below 10,000 mark before the cases started surging again.
