Delhi: Lesser positivity rates suffice claims of second wave crossing its peak

New Delhi: For the sixth straight day in a row, Delhi recorded less than 4,000 fresh cases on Friday. On Thursday, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had said that the second wave of coronavirus has peaked in Delhi. The current trend backs his claims. Moreover, a lesser number of new cases have been registered despite a high number of tests in last few days. The positivity rate is significantly going down. It is much lesser than the cumulative rate of the city.

Delhi recorded 3,827 new coronavirus cases, taking the cumulative tally to 2,64,450 on Friday. 24 people died due to coronavirus in the last 24 hours. The death toll has risen to 5,147 in the national capital. The fresh cases have come out of 59,134 tests conducted on the previous day. 47,337 rapid antigen tests and 11,997 RTPCR, CBNAAT and True Nat tests were conducted.

The number of tests conducted on a single day has gone up significantly as the days progressed in this month. The number of tests conducted and corresponding fresh cases reported, ranged from 24,198 (2,312) on September 1 to 59,183 (3,714) on September 24. The number of tests done per million was 1,48,192 while the total number of tests stood at over 28,15,650 lakh.

There has been a downward trend in the positivity rate as well. On Friday, the positivity rate was recorded at 6.47 per cent. It was 6.48 per cent on Thursday. The cumulative positivity rate has been recorded at 9.39 per cent.

Meanwhile, the silver lining has been the increased number of recoveries in the national capital. On Friday, more than 4,000 patients recovered from the deadly disease. The number of recoveries was higher than the new cases. With 4,061 recoveries, Delhi’s total recovery count reached 2,28,436 on Friday. The number of recoveries has been continuously above the 3,000 mark in the last few days.

The recovery rate is slowly improving in the city. It was 86.38 per cent on Friday, better than 86.09 per cent recorded on Thursday. Before the recent upsurge in cases, it had gone above 90 per cent and was there for many days.

Increased number of recoveries also affected the active cases count. Active cases declined by 258 in the last 24 hours. Delhi has now 30,867 active cases. Active cases have risen three times since August. It had gone below 10,000 mark in August. The number of people in home isolation rose to 18,096 from 17,995 on the previous day. Out of the total number of 15,812 beds in COVID hospitals, 8,822 are vacant.

Health Minister Satyendar Jain met with medical directors and medical superintendents of all Delhi government hospitals to review the status of testing in the national capital. Chief Secretary Vijay Dev also met with district magistrates on coronavirus management.
