Poor upkeep at I'puram's Harsha City Mall an invitation to dengue! Priyanka Rana, co-chairman of RWA Federation Ghaziabad, and Sanjeev Dixit (fourth from left), chairman of Harsha City Merchants Welfare Association, take stock of the situation at the mall

Members of the RWA Federation Ghaziabad in coordination with members of Harsha City Merchants Welfare Association carried out an inspection and a dengue awareness drive in the vicinity of Harsha City Mall in Shakti Khand II, Indirapuram, on Sunday.

Residents and shopkeepers found that the parking lot located in the basement of the mall had turned into a breeding ground for mosquitoes as rainwater had seeped into it.

Members of the federation poured diesel into the stagnant water to curb the breeding of mosquitoes, and also inspected the drainage, the parking facility and the fire-fighting system. They found that all the facilities were out of order.

Members of the Harsha City Merchants Welfare Association (HCMWA) alleged that despite paying a maintenance charge of Rs 9 per sq ft, the maintenance office did not provide services such as garbage disposal and cleaning of washrooms. Amenities such as escalators and parking lots have been left in a state of disuse by the developer. And this has turned various areas of the mall into a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

When residents reached the maintenance office of the mall, they found that Mervir Singh, the maintenance manager, had given them the slip, as he had prior information about the drive.

Speaking to City Spidey, Priyanka Rana, co-chairman of RWA Federation Ghaziabad, said that the stagnant water, open drains and the unorganised dumping of waste would certainly increase the population of mosquitoes. That would, in turn, increase the possibility of spreading dengue in the neighbouring areas.

Both the RWA Federation and the HCMWA have decided to approach the GDA and the builder, Harsha Group, with a detailed report of the unhygienic conditions in the mall.

The drive was led by Rana, with support from Sanjeev Dixit, chairman of the HCMWA.
