What makes a dish delicious? A skilled chef, high-quality materials, and recipes passed down and improved upon from generation to generation are just a few examples. While this is undoubtedly true, you might be shocked to learn that many cuisines were discovered by mistake. That's right: instead of congratulating the cook, you can thank the universe for the random events or mistakes that gave birth to these feasts.
While we all know that it took Colonel Sanders years and 1009 rejections to produce and sell the ultimate fried chicken recipe, this isn't always the case. Who'd have guessed that cheese curls were a machine's waste product? Or that beer was discovered by accident when keeping wheat for bread making? In fact, some of the most popular cuisines on the planet were discovered by mistake.
So the next time you try to make something in the kitchen and it turns out as something entirely different, remember to embrace your culinary accidents - they might wind up as the next international taste sensation.
Coca-cola
John Pemberton, a wounded soldier, tried to manufacture this drink as part of an experiment to find an alternative to his cocaine addiction. In his pharmacy, he made a tonic containing small doses of cocaine and the caffeine-rich Kola nut. Another pharmacist, Asa Candler, paid $2,300 for it and added soda to boost the bubbles. By the late 1890s, Coca-Cola had become America's most popular fountain drink.
Ice-cream cones
Crispy waffle cones are utilised not only to keep the ice cream in place but also to provide flavour. It was 1904, and an ice cream vendor ran out of dishes to serve his ice cream, so Hamwi, a nearby concessionaire, wrapped waffles into cones so his neighbour’s ice cream could be kept inside. The cones were an instant hit, and people of all ages continue to enjoy them.
Chocolate chip cookies
Chocolate chips cookies are another quick-fix snack that fulfils sweet cravings. Ruth Wakefield created this delectable nibble by accident in 1930. She was in the middle of cooking a batch of chocolate cookies when she realised she was out of chocolate. She next added a bar of chocolate to the cookie batter, which she crushed. The crushed chocolate formed chunks, resulting in choco chip cookies, and the dish quickly gained popularity.
Coffee
Coffee was first discovered in the mountains of Yemen by a shepherd. He was out grazing his animals and his goat ate the plant beans accidentally and kept awake for quite a long time. That’s how the power of coffee beans was discovered for the first time.
Popsicles
Sweet and tangy frozen delights which are enjoyed especially during the summer season, popsicles too were an accidental invention. It was in 1905 when Frank Epperson left his soda-making equipment out on his porch. The next morning he discovered that the stick he was using to stir the mixture had frozen upright in the liquid. He later applied for a patent for this discovery by the name ‘Epsicle’ which is now more commonly known as popsicles.
