Bunty aur Babli 2: Will the new generation outsmart the originals

The comic, thrilling world of get ups, accents, and cons is back. Yash Raj Films decides to launch the sequel of its hit 2005 project Bunty aur Babli featuring Rani Mukherjee and Abhishek Bachchan.

16 years after the first film, Babli, the fashion queen of Fursatganj is now an ‘adarsh homemaker’. On the other hand, Bunty, who is played by Saif here is an aging ticket collector, with a protruding belly who works out with a cylinder. As the narrator, the lovely Pankaj Tripathi, their life is like a “DoorDarshan serial”.

This change of heart may be temporary as cases of fraud by Babli aur Babli are back in the newspapers. However, the OG Bunty aur Babli have little to do with it. Here comes the new generation. Gully Boy fame MC Sher Siddhant Chaturvedi and Sharvari Wagh gear up as Junior Bunty and Babli. The two shine in the trailer with Chaturvedi as playful, relatable and boyishly charming and Sharvari as the fierce, confident and dynamic.

As a fast, Saif and Rani too return together to the screen after 12 long years. With or without screen presence, their mettle as actors is undoubtable. It is a delight to see Rani back as Babli with the same glare. One wonders why didn’t Abhishek return as Bunty.

Nevertheless, the cast is still stellar. We see Pankaj Tripathi making a pleasant appearance as the policeman. We also see glimpses of Yaspal Sharma and Asrani. One expected more insight to the album, except the title track. The movie is directed by debutante Varun Sharma and produced by Aditya Chopra. The trailer promises the movie to be a complete family entertainer.

As the Covid situation has improved in India, YRF has announced that the movie will release only on big screens. Being a major production, there may be an influx of people returning to theatres. Will Bunty aur Babli match the ingenuity and charm of the first? Or will it be an ordinary chase; one can only find out on November 19th.
