We've all have experienced acne-related problems at different stages in life. Acne can be caused by the changing season, eating fatty foods and hormonal changes. But figuring out how to reduce acne growth and its consequences on our faces is a bigger concern than having acne. Don't worry, simple dietary changes can help you reduce acne.
Dr Chiranjiv Singh, a skin dermatologist from Delhi says, “One thing that can affect your skin is your diet. Certain foods raise your blood sugar more quickly than others. When your blood sugar rises quickly, it causes the body to release a hormone called insulin. Having excess insulin in your blood can cause your oil glands to produce more oil, increasing the risk of acne.”
Check out these tips that may help to prevent acne:
1. Reduce Milk Intake
Milk can give you acne. Cows milk for instance is loaded with growth hormones (including IGF-1 and Bovine). So each time you absorb these hormones from milk, it will negatively affect your skin health. And also the androgenic effect of whey from milk products is going to adversely affect hormones and trigger acne and facial hair.
2. Avoid foods with a high glycemic index
Corn syrup, sugar, white flour, refined grains, sauces, ketchup, sodas, sports drinks, juices, and processed meats containing hidden sugars should be avoided. These foods have a high glycemic index, which can lead to acne.
3. Kill Acne with Zinc
Research shows zinc is as effective and better than topical treatments like clindamycin and erythromycin. Both topical and dietary zinc has natural anti-inflammatory properties and inhibits acne-causing bacteria. Include zinc-rich foods in your diet like kidney beans, oysters, red meat and pumpkin seeds
4. Cut Down on Iodine
Acne is closely linked to excess iodine in the diet. If you love Japanese food, avoid seaweed or sushi rolls. We sometimes overdo iodine in our foods as a whole lot of ingredients like salt is fortified with iodine to avoid deficiencies. Please remember not to cut down iodine completely, but reduce the intake of salt, which will then do wonders for your skin.
5. Enrich diet in Omega-3
Flaxseeds, chia seeds, and fish oil should all be ingested regularly to maintain your skin healthy. These foods maintain healthy skin and are beneficial to our bodies in a variety of ways.
Dr Chiranjiv Singh suggests some general tips to reduce acne and have healthy skin:
He added, “Besides these tips, eat mindfully, watch your portions, read labels, choose food that you could hunt or gather and avoid pre-packaged junk. Include Vitamin D supplements, and snacks regularly to keep blood sugar levels well managed. Acne is only a reflection of what's going wrong inside. A holistic and natural approach to food will balance hormones and eliminate toxins very effectively.”
Include these suggestions in your daily life to have acne-free healthy skin.
