The narrow road between Rosewood and Vardhaman Apartments in Mayur Vihar Phase I Extension has become a preferred spot for antisocial elements, drunkards and drug addicts after dark. There are no streetlights on the stretch, causing it to plunge into darkness after dusk.

The situation is unpleasant for residents of both the societies. "These people are oblivious to the fact that they might be disturbing us," said a resident of Rosewood Apartments, who preferred to remain anonymous. "They use foul language and raise quite a ruckus. Since our flat faces the lane, we feel uncomfortable coming out to the balcony or drawing the curtains aside."

Residents say they have been bringing the issue to the notice of both East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) and the police over the past few years but neither has taken the matter seriously.

"It's been a while that I requested Nikki Singh, the area councillor, to instal streetlights in the area, but nothing has been done so far," said Sudha Shrivastav, president of the Rosewood Apartments managing committee.

Rattan Lal Gupta, secretary of the Vardhaman Apartments managing committee, told City Spidey that the lane had been constructed by Delhi Development Authority (DDA). "The road leads to a garden that people used to frequent. But now no one uses this route," he said.

When asked whether he had lodged a complaint with the Authority regarding this, Gupta said he hadn't approach the DDA so far but had written to a local MLA, an MP and the area's municipal councillor, requesting them to either deploy a permanent guard restricting entry to the troublemakers or cordon off the street.
