Detecting kidney damage on your own is not possible unless your kidney stops functioning completely. Kidney damage can happen slowly and in stages.

Dr Sunil Prakash, a Delhi based Nephrologist says early detection of kidney damage is not possible until and unless you go through any test. Generally, people realize it after the kidney gets 30-40% damaged. Certain tell take signs of kidney damage can be a sudden increase in blood pressure, Face swelling, Ankles, and Stomach swelling. Nausea, and Vomiting.

Dr Vikram Kalra, another Nephrologist from Delhi says, "The major factors of kidney damage can be categorized in two parts. One is modified and the other one is unmodified. The unmodified comes from family history, the second factor is ageing, if you are getting older then the chances of getting kidney disease get higher. The third factor is congenital if it is a by birth factor."

The kidney's main function is to purify the blood and to remove the toxicity from your blood in form of waste through urine. Dr Prashant Kumar, a Health Coordinator in Delhi says that certain factors which cause kidney damage are-

Untreated diabetes: This is one of the most prominent factors which can lead to kidney damage. Over time, uncontrolled diabetes can cause damage to the blood vessel clusters in your kidneys that filter waste from your blood. This can lead to kidney damage and cause high blood pressure too.

Hypertension- The second factor is Hypertension. High blood pressure can cause further kidney damage by increasing the pressure in the delicate filtering system of the kidneys. The arteries around the kidney may not be able to deliver enough blood to the kidney tissue.

Kidney Damage can also be caused by certain daily habits.

Taking painkillers without a doctor's advice: It may give relief to your pain for some moment but it can cause severe damage to your kidneys and can worsen your kidney disease if it is already damaged.

Regular smoking and consuming liquor are injurious to your heart as well as your kidney too.

Not having proper sleep can cause damage to the kidney. Proper sleep patterns can help in regulating kidney functions which reduces the kidneys' workload over 24 hours.

High sodium content in food can lead to high Blood pressure can cause kidney damage.

Prevention and Cure

  • Doctors suggested certain preventive measures to avoid kidney damage-
  • Regular checkups if one has a history of kidney damage in the family.
  • Treat diabetes and cure it.
  • Be physically active and walk for around 180-200 minutes a week.
  • Yoga is also very necessary in treating diseases like this as yoga can cure hypertension.
  • Don't consume processed food. As it is a significant source of sodium and phosphorus which is harmful to kidneys and bones.
  • Staying hydrated will help the kidney to clear toxins and sodium from your body. It can also help avoid kidney stones.
