Doctor G can be a good weekend watch

'Doctor G is another typical Aushmann Khurana social comedy,' this is what you must have read about the movie on the internet. However, here, Ayushman goes aboard to show the true face of a medical system wherein gynaecologists have only been women. In the directorial debut of Anubhuti Kashyap, the film stars Aushmann Khurana, Rakulpreet Singha and Shefali Shah.

Anubhuti Kashyap's venture of direction can be appreciated for its relevant message! The film captures a journey where Dr Uday grows as a person with several personal and professional circumstances. Women in the film have given strong performances be it Shefali Shah or Sheeba Chaddha. These factors make the movies an enjoyable experience.

One thing that has been repeated in the film is "Tujhe ladkiyon ki baat sunayi hi ni deti hai." Dr Uday played by Ayushmann is shown as a male chauvinist. The stereotypical character of Ayushmann in the first half of the movie is a little cringe. His sexist comments made the public dislike the character and judge him. Though just like other movies of Ayushmann, this one also has a message in a very indirect form. The dialogues and the character make people awkward but represent the social reality.

The movie starts with Ayushmann saying "Jo cheez mere paas hai hi nahi, uska ilaaj kaise karoon." Ayushamnn's character's name is Dr Uday, and he is a student in the Gynaecology department. Uday is a mid-class boy from a small town who doesn't want to be in the Gynaecology department as it is considered a ladies' problem department (Stree-rog) by him.

However, just for securing a seat, he joins the department and treats it like an option. Being a male Gynaecologist and his struggle is shown in the film. The movie deals with social taboos which take us to other movies of Ayushmann such as 'Badhai ho' or 'Vicky Donor'.

Women in the film have given strong performances be it Shefali Shah or Sheeba Chaddha. Shah is convincing as the stern and practical professor who shows the mirror to Uday's character in several instances in the film.

Sheeba Chaddha makes a strong statement addressing the taboo behind middle-aged people falling in love. However, one thing which is a little difficult to accept is the background of Dr Uday and why was he so regressive. This is because Sheeba Chaddha 'Laxmi Devi', Uday's mother is not influenced by the patriarchal society. Growing up with a single mother who is modern with her thinking, it is questionable why her son is so stereotypical.

Rakulpreet has a very simple role but meaningful role. She doesn't get much screen time but establishes a very important fact in the given time. She explains a very important point that every girl wants to explain which is girls can want boys to be their friends too. I feel that Rakul Preet as Dr Fatima could have been given more screen time.

One miss is that the film lacks continuity. Many characters appear on screen for minutes but are left unexplored. The music is also very average.

Nevertheless, Doctor G can be a good weekend watch with good company. We suggest everyone should watch the film once to take back some progressive ideas.
