About 200 residents of various group housing societies in Mayur Vihar Phase I attended the inauguration of a bridge near Hindustan Times Apartments and Sahyog Apartments on the morning of January 24. The bridge was inaugurated by Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia.

Residents were full of praise for Public Works Department (PWD) for giving them a means to avoid traffic to reach the Noida-Delhi link road.

JP Sharma, secretary of the Sahyog Apartments managing committee, said, “Traffic chaos near the Mayur Vihar Phase 1 Metro station was a daily nuisance. Now we can directly get to the main road. I thank the PWD for constructing the bridge here.”

Ashok Gupta, another resident of Mayur Vihar Phase I, said, “It was a much-needed development. Residents driving cars can now directly take this road to reach Mayur Vihar Phase I, Vasundhara Enclave and Noida.”

A senior PWD official, who is in charge of East Delhi, told City Spidey that constructing the bridge was a difficult job for the department, as there were a number of hurdles to be ovcercome.

“The drain on which the bridge has been constructed belongs to the Flood Department of the Uttar Pradesh government; the road outside the societies is under the jurisdiction of East Delhi Municipal Cooperation; and the space below the Metro lane is under Delhi Development Authority. Getting consent from three departments was a tough task for us. There were several political issues as well,” said the official, on condition of anonymity.

Along with a number of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) supporters at the function, there was a group of about 50 people who were protesting against Sisodia with black flags. However, they could not get close to him as the Delhi police stopped them about 200 metres from the bridge.

When Sandhya Verma, municipal councillor (BJP) of the area, reached the bridge, she expressed her displeasure over her name not being included in the foundation stone of the bridge, along with Sisodia. She said, “The councillor deserves credit. I appreciate the development in the area but it also belongs to the municipal corporation.”
