The sound of cars and bikes zipping past each other reverberated across the city as more than 200 motorsports enthusiasts thronged DLF Gardencity in Gurgaon on April 22.

Titled Speed Sprint XVI, the sporting event was meant to challenge both the vehicle's limits and the motorists skills on the track with more than 34 directions. The single-stage sprint rally witnessed participation from across North India, including Delhi, Noida and Lucknow. The aim was to provide motor junkies a track to race on.

The races were held in three categories — zip, zap and zoom. Zip race was for amateurs, zap for professionals and zoom for bikers.  The 3.7-km track was all tarmac, and had a series of 90 lefts and rights on a narrow road.

A huge crowd had gathered to cheer Bani Yadav, India's fastest women motorist. She is the first woman to receive the FMSCI — Outstanding Woman in Motorsports Award for Rallying for 2016. Her latest achievement was a third-place finish (1st among women) in the over-1650cc category at the National Autocross Championship.

Yadav said, “It was a pleasure to participate in Speed Sprint XVI on my home turf. The crowd was very supportive and I am overwhelmed by their affection.”

“I have always been passionate about cars and was super excited to be part of the races. The thrill of speeding and manoeuvring the vehicle on the track is incredible. It also offered a platform to bond with enthusiasts from different cities,” said Akash Ahuja, a participant.

“Being an avid motorist I thoroughly enjoyed watching the competition. Although I did not participate, you will definitely see me behind the wheels next time,” added Rupal Chauhan, a spectator.

“The main aim of organising Speed Sprint was to provide a platform to motor enthusiasts to pursue their passion. It is disheartening to see motor junkies using roads as racing tracks,” said Sudev Brar, a member of InCarNation Sports, which organised the event.

“We are delighted that the event received such an overwhelming response. It was organised to give everyone an opportunity to indulge in motorsports. We also had live music, food trucks and entertainment for all. It was heartening to see that a large number of people turned up to both participate and enjoy the evening,” said Col (Retd) Tejbir Singh, AVP (Township), DLF.
