5 things Presidium parents want from schools

Parents of children studying in Presidium School in Indirapuram organised a press conference today against the illegal development fees charged from them.

In their interaction with the media and journalists, parents blamed the inaction and the callous attitude of the district magistrate and the CBSE officials, which allowed schools to get away with flouting norms.

Members of the Presidium Parents' Association (PPA), as the group named itself, also said that their wards were humiliated in class for not clearing the "dues". School authorities, however, have denied this.

Spurred on by the Presidium incident, the PPA demanded that the following norms be implemented in schools:

1. Fee regulatory committee: The state committee should ensure transparency in the fees charged by schools and monitor its fee hikes every year.

2. Formation of PTA: The process of selecting the parent-teacher association (PTA) should be made transparent.

3. Balance sheet to be made available: The school should declare its balance sheet to ensure no unlawful profit is being earned.

4. Selling of books and uniforms: It should not be mandatory for students to buy books and uniforms from the school alone. Other options should also be left open.

5. Admission process: The school's admission process needs to comply with CBSE by-laws and Right to Education (RTE).
