Dwarka: SDMC’s new WhatsApp initiative fails to inspire hope in residents

What’s new in Dwarka? Recently, South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) is set to form zonal-level WhatsApp groups to gather feedback from area RWAs, market associations and residents on solid waste management, disposal of garbage and other sanitation issues.

Based on the feedback, SDMC will rank the areas on Swachhta parameters.

But residents are sceptical. Previous WhatsApp experiments by SDMC haven’t had much of an impact. In an earlier initiative, residents were asked to send pictures of unattended garbage at particular numbers.

Residents did, hoping for some impact. But nothing came of it.

A resident of Sri Agrasen Apartments, AK Parashar, said, “I shared more than 100 photographs on the WhatsApp number provided by SDMC on boards across Dwarka. But I didn’t get any acknowledgement or complaint number. WhatsApp is a quick and effective tool of communication, but only if the authorities pay attention. I hope the new initiative is more effective.”

Pankaj Dhingra, a resident of Abhiyan Apartments, Sector 12, echoed similar sentiments. “If it works, great! But our previous experience tells us otherwise.”

Dwarka Forum general secretary SK Goel said WhatsApp initiatives must be supported by real work on the ground. He said, “Clicking photographs and giving feedback is fine, but things must move forward too!”
