Gurgaon: In Sector 56 and Sector 57, plastic bags are a thing of the past Residents pose with the jail inmates

In a conscious effort to make a difference to the environment, the residents and shopkeepers in Gurgaon’s Sector 56 and Sector 57 have now completely stopped the use of polythene.

The move against polythene was started almost eight months back and now the HUDA market, which is incidentally one of the largest shopping complexes in this area, has also switched over to paper bags.

The people of these two sectors have taken inspiration from the government directive of banning polythene. Mahesh Dayma, a resident had initiated a drive in association with the district administration whereby shopkeepers and residents consciously pledged to discontinue the usage of polythene bags.

Awareness camps had been conducted in the residential and market areas and today the shopkeepers either use paper or cloth bags for disbursing items. Interestingly, the jail inmates of Bhondsi were engaged for stitching the cloth carry bags.

Speaking to City Spidey, Mahesh Dayma said, “Our motive behind involving the jail inmates was to train them in cloth bag making; a skill that can translate to a means of livelihood after their jail tenures are over.” He further added, “We pick up leftovers of cloth pieces from leading export houses which they consciously donate for this cause”

A resident of the area, Gulshan Pahwa said, “It is heartening to see that people are aware about environmental issues and taking actions to preserve the environment. If each of us stops the use of polythene, there will be a drastic change in the pollution levels.”
